OrangeHRM Announces the release of Open Source 4.0

We are excited to announce the new version of OrangeHRM Open Source 4.0 will be released in the middle of June, 2017.

One of the main highlights of this new version is the opening up of 40+ REST APIs. These REST APIs are for the Admin, PIM, Leave & Time modules respectively.

What are the aims of 4.0?

Our primary objective for 4.0 is to empower our developer community to build applications that can enrich our ecosystem. We already have a couple of the beta testers who are creating applications that will interface with third party tools.

OrangeHRM app store was created for our community members who would like to monetize their applications”. Said Sujee Saparamadu CEO and Founder of OrangeHRM “ With a 3.5 Million user base we will be able to market these applications that will enhance the productivity of our clients.”

How can you learn more?

There have already been a number of sample applications created for our community. You can download the sample app today from here and try it out for yourself - if you have any feedback or questions, get in touch. These sample app’s show how to use the REST APIs.

OrangeHRM has also been made available for “api-client-PHP” which eases the use of these REST APIs.  You can download the User guide for the API’s here.

This is really exciting for us, and our community. Having a feature rich OrangeHRM API set is like giving an empty canvas to a painter - the opportunities for creativity are endless. Said Lawrence Knowles Chief Product Officer at OrangeHRMI am expecting our community to build and develop some fantastic applications that will revolutionize the HR domain.”

We are continuously in the process of updating the REST APIs, and we will be updating our community with the latest progressions on our blog, so keep your eye out for further news.

AI and not losing the human touch

Lawrence Knowles, Chief Product Officer at OrangeHRM talks about the ever growing importance of using the right tools to recruit the right talent. He explores the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and recruitment, and explains how personality matching can aid decision making.

Artificial Intelligence and recruiting has been one of the most talked about topics in recent months. With the advent of robotics and automation, the link between humans and machines is ever growing - from chatbot’s guiding people through service processes to full scale human augmentation, and even replacement through both machines and algorithms.

There is barely a day that goes by without a new report on which jobs will be displaced and in what timeframes and the impact on the economy - these often vary and make disturbing reading. What we are also seeing at the same time is that hiring volumes are increasing but the budget given to the recruitment teams are either the same as before or reduced.

This is further driving the automation around intelligent resume parsing, matching skills using taxonomies against job descriptions, eliminating the need to waste time manually screening unqualified candidates. Further still, there are now online solutions allowing detailed background checking which is often an extremely intensive manual process, with major inefficiencies around paper based workflow.

Throughout the introduction of such systems there is naturally a debate on bias, well we are sure there has been natural bias within recruitment for decades, but this shouldn’t be an excuse for not implementing best practice and efficiency moving forward.

One new area we have been exploring at OrangeHRM is that of personality trait matching. We are in no doubt the solutions described above are valid, but believe they need extending. How often a candidate has been seen by someone during the recruitment process and that innate human ability to understand their personality and how they would fit into an existing team environment.

OrangeHRM have collaborated with IBM, using their Watson technology, and created a fully integrated solution that allows recruiting managers to view the personality match of the candidates against the team they are being recruited into. We believe this offers another dimension in what today is a candidate-driven market and offers a critical tool to help you to both attract and compete for talent, ensuring you make the right hire.

Should Computers Take Over Your Hiring Cycle?

Posted in Development, General, Product Releases  by Shaun Bradley No Comments

As apps and SaaS offer greater service in the recruiting arena, is it time for humans to get out of the game?

A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) suggests algorithms are better equipped to make hiring decisions that boost company retention rates.  The study involved a meta-analysis of 300,000 employment records from 15 different companies. About a third of the employees hired were assessed and hired based on online personality and skills testing.

Some fine points of the study include:

•    The study evaluated positions that are generally considered repetitive or lower skill jobs, such as employment in a call center, or grading standardized tests.
•    The retention rate for those chosen by computer was 15 percent higher than hires made by humans.
•    Hires made by humans were not significantly more or less productive than those made by computer.

One of the study authors, Dr. Mitchell Hoffman, notes, “It definitely suggests that more decision making powers should be given to the machine relative to the humans.”

Have recruiters and hiring managers become outdated?

Mind and machine—the best hiring combination

Algorithms used throughout the recruiting cycle are worth the cost.  #ProjectNova, the ATS solution from OrangeHRM, uses Watson technology to offer fine-grained candidate analysis and comparison.  From cultivating social media for candidate information, to prompting specific interview questions, Project Nova is a digital recruiting assistant.

But does a sophisticated ATS module dismiss the human factor?  The short answer is “no.”

Just as HR software created time and data efficiencies for HR, Project Nova and other ATS tools perform tasks that streamline and improve the recruiting process.  From populating niche job boards, to cultivating better data, Project Nova and similar tools give managers the edge in hiring the right talent for the job.

Despite such advantages, these products remain tools, not decision makers.
The NBER study evaluated lower level, high-turnover positions.  While software could be useful in these instances, it is not likely algorithms will become stand-alone hiring tools for recruiting the skilled, high-level talent essential for keeping your company competitive.

Retention rates are one piece of a more complex hiring puzzle. Homogeneous hiring decisions could be successful for a certain type of business, but less helpful for a dynamic company dependent on its creative and development teams for getting products and services to market.

Using improved social and recruiting technology tools means HR personnel can spend more time on strategy, and fine-tuning retention policies.  The best hiring combination utilizes both mind—and machine.

OrangeHRM now available in Chinese, French & German

Posted in Product Releases  by Shaun Bradley 3 Comments

OrangeHRM has been translated to many languages during the past few years; however most of the other OrangeHRM add-ons didn’t have translations for any languages. As the first phase of providing translations for all major languages with our new product line which is the OrangeHRM Open Source version, OrangeHRM Professional and OrangeHRM Enterprise we have translations for Chinese, French and German.

The Chinese language (Madarin) being the most widely spoken language in the world in 2013 and with OrangeHRM having an increasing number of users from China, we have translated the product to Chinese in order to provide a more convenient product to clients. Thanks to Freddy Hew for the translations a native Chinese speaker with over 25 years of experience in Chinese to English translations..

France is another country has been using the open source version increasingly in the past few years. We also have a number of clients using our advanced versions and we have received many requests for the system to be translated to French. Eulalie Mulero, a professional translator since 2008 and has been translating English and Spanish to French completed the translation.

Finally for the 1st phase we have the German language pack ready again due to the over whelming user requests. Stephan Hornick, a German language teacher completed this translation.

We have started the 2nd phase of this project and we are glad to let you know that Spanish, Italian and Dutch packs are in line to be released in the 1stquarter of 2014.
