AI and not losing the human touch

Lawrence Knowles, Chief Product Officer at OrangeHRM talks about the ever growing importance of using the right tools to recruit the right talent. He explores the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and recruitment, and explains how personality matching can aid decision making.

Artificial Intelligence and recruiting has been one of the most talked about topics in recent months. With the advent of robotics and automation, the link between humans and machines is ever growing - from chatbot’s guiding people through service processes to full scale human augmentation, and even replacement through both machines and algorithms.

There is barely a day that goes by without a new report on which jobs will be displaced and in what timeframes and the impact on the economy - these often vary and make disturbing reading. What we are also seeing at the same time is that hiring volumes are increasing but the budget given to the recruitment teams are either the same as before or reduced.

This is further driving the automation around intelligent resume parsing, matching skills using taxonomies against job descriptions, eliminating the need to waste time manually screening unqualified candidates. Further still, there are now online solutions allowing detailed background checking which is often an extremely intensive manual process, with major inefficiencies around paper based workflow.

Throughout the introduction of such systems there is naturally a debate on bias, well we are sure there has been natural bias within recruitment for decades, but this shouldn’t be an excuse for not implementing best practice and efficiency moving forward.

One new area we have been exploring at OrangeHRM is that of personality trait matching. We are in no doubt the solutions described above are valid, but believe they need extending. How often a candidate has been seen by someone during the recruitment process and that innate human ability to understand their personality and how they would fit into an existing team environment.

OrangeHRM have collaborated with IBM, using their Watson technology, and created a fully integrated solution that allows recruiting managers to view the personality match of the candidates against the team they are being recruited into. We believe this offers another dimension in what today is a candidate-driven market and offers a critical tool to help you to both attract and compete for talent, ensuring you make the right hire.

Should Computers Take Over Your Hiring Cycle?

Posted in Development, General, Product Releases  by Shaun Bradley No Comments

As apps and SaaS offer greater service in the recruiting arena, is it time for humans to get out of the game?

A recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) suggests algorithms are better equipped to make hiring decisions that boost company retention rates.  The study involved a meta-analysis of 300,000 employment records from 15 different companies. About a third of the employees hired were assessed and hired based on online personality and skills testing.

Some fine points of the study include:

•    The study evaluated positions that are generally considered repetitive or lower skill jobs, such as employment in a call center, or grading standardized tests.
•    The retention rate for those chosen by computer was 15 percent higher than hires made by humans.
•    Hires made by humans were not significantly more or less productive than those made by computer.

One of the study authors, Dr. Mitchell Hoffman, notes, “It definitely suggests that more decision making powers should be given to the machine relative to the humans.”

Have recruiters and hiring managers become outdated?

Mind and machine—the best hiring combination

Algorithms used throughout the recruiting cycle are worth the cost.  #ProjectNova, the ATS solution from OrangeHRM, uses Watson technology to offer fine-grained candidate analysis and comparison.  From cultivating social media for candidate information, to prompting specific interview questions, Project Nova is a digital recruiting assistant.

But does a sophisticated ATS module dismiss the human factor?  The short answer is “no.”

Just as HR software created time and data efficiencies for HR, Project Nova and other ATS tools perform tasks that streamline and improve the recruiting process.  From populating niche job boards, to cultivating better data, Project Nova and similar tools give managers the edge in hiring the right talent for the job.

Despite such advantages, these products remain tools, not decision makers.
The NBER study evaluated lower level, high-turnover positions.  While software could be useful in these instances, it is not likely algorithms will become stand-alone hiring tools for recruiting the skilled, high-level talent essential for keeping your company competitive.

Retention rates are one piece of a more complex hiring puzzle. Homogeneous hiring decisions could be successful for a certain type of business, but less helpful for a dynamic company dependent on its creative and development teams for getting products and services to market.

Using improved social and recruiting technology tools means HR personnel can spend more time on strategy, and fine-tuning retention policies.  The best hiring combination utilizes both mind—and machine.

Posted in Development, General, Updates  by admin 4 Comments

Having access to the most up-to-date Human Resource Management software can make a big difference to any organization. This is why Orange HRM, the world’s most popular open source human resource management provider, is focused on maintaining a product that works well for the long-term.

OrangeHRM Open Source Summer 2014 Release Improvements

Our most recent release of the OrangeHRM open source HRM included some client-centered and security improvements. For this release, OrangeHRM’s engineering team wanted to make sure that information data continues to meet the highest security compliance levels. One such improvement was to improve the password hash security by using bcrypt to generate the password hash. Although all versions of our open source products and add-ons have been secure, this adds another layer of security to our platform for the ongoing protection of user data.

Greater HRM Data Control and Customized Reporting

Another improvement to the OrangeHRM open source product this release was to generate the csrf token used in symfony forms at install time and save it in hs_hr_config instead of having it as a fixed value in settings.yml This enables our members to create customized forms that better match up with standard payroll software and other applications when sharing and transmitting reports. One of the initiatives of OrangeHRM has always been to maintain a product that allows HR administrators the ability to manage their data across a central human capital process. This streamlines and makes employee information management easier and customized.

Making HRM Better with OrangeHRM

As a whole, users of OrangeHRM open source human resource management software have been able to rely on us to give HR managers the power to manage a wide range of HR functions. Each new release brings with it a broader gamut of HR administrative tasks. This includes a great deal of security too, which is something that all organizations need to maintain employment compliance in an evolving global economy.

Orange HRM is the most popular open source human resource management (HRM) software in the world. Thousands of clients rely on our product for employee time and leave management, payroll administration, and more. Therefore, we work hard to make sure that the latest fixes are in place to ensure smooth operation, even in our open source product.

Separating Project Time and Punch In/Out

Posted in Development  by Himath 2 Comments

In the current version of OrangeHRM, project time and punch in/out time entry mechanisms are integrated in a single timesheet. The punch in/out was introduced as an easier way to enter time for organizations that do not want detailed information of time spent on projects and activities.

However, based on user feedback, some organizations use both these type of time entry mechanisms. Punch In/Out is basically used to track attendance and project time is used to track detailed information on time spent on various projects and activities.

To improve the usability of this feature, we have decided to separate these 2 time tracking functionalities. We will introduce a new report type: Attendance Report. Further, there will be configurable options to restrict employees’ rights to edit already reported Punch In/Out time data.

The latest definition of this feature is on our Wiki: Link
